The Melakan Chittys are Straits-born Indian and offsprings of Indian traders who came from Panail Koromandel in India. This unique community is the descendants of the early Indian merchant who came here sometime during the 15th century. They practice Hindu faith, speaks Malay, food is typical Indian and they practice the traditional Indian wedding ceremony. The Chitty women wears 'sarung' just like the Nyonyas and traditional Malay women.
